In case anyone’s curious, the number of stripes and orientation (bottom is red) are correct to the flag.
Was it 13 stripes for the original 13 colonies or am I hallucinating?
Correct.
The early flag from the post-revolutionary War (Betsy Ross flag) had 13 stripes, indicating the separated colonies, and the blue square contained 13 stars in a circle orientation, indicating the new united colonies in one “circle”. We then changed the stars to a square pattern and added stars as we added additional states.
