Yeah, second hand opinions can be a thing and it’s the main reason I still argue online … but gosh can it be exhausting arguing with a wall.

I’ve always had this opinion… I never got the hype…

I’m looking forward to just all the weird window management stuff being fixed by not having to use X11. For instance, Hunt Showdown currently freezes when you alt tab out of the game and folks have linked that to XWayland kind of but not really minimizing the game in the background.

That sounds likely, at least any time soon. It would be a lot of work to get up to par with the other implementations I’m sure.

Hmm… Interesting how they function with the compositors meant for other desktops. I didn’t know that was going to be a possibility in the Wayland sphere because of how close window management and compositing are in Wayland.

Unless it’s a musical… and this is why I hate musicals…

It turns out consumers aren’t totally mindless drones that just buy whatever you publish because you’re Ubisoft, Ubisoft.

I swear they’ve been incredibly cocky in recent years while simultaneously producing bad games, and broadcasting their stagnation and unwillingness to take risks on anything that isn’t a new revenue stream (as if being formulaic profit hounds is a strength).

I swear MBAs ruin everything. Infinite growth is a horrible horrible idea. I wish we could break out of this cycle of every big company trying to market themselves as the company that cracked the code on the infinite money glitch. The code is … make a good product and be decent to your customers; it’s an ancient code, and it’s so annoying that so many C-suite folks can’t see it.

I think that’s a characterization of what happened but not necessarily a good representation of what actually happened.

Yes, some researchers in Zurich found vulnerabilities. Yes they down played them … because you still couldn’t read anything. They were also already working on a new protocol before those researches wrote their paper and yes I’m sure they made some tweaks based on their findings.

You could say the same thing about Signal’s response to their “desktop security scandal” earlier this year (of which Threema wasn’t vulnerable and Signal repeatedly refused to acknowledge as a problem).

They do support PFS (perfect forward secrecy) though their new multi-device solution doesn’t yet support it.

This is the same protocol they were already working on when the “researches they insulted” released their research finding issues with the old protocol.

IMO this entire sentence is just wrong.

I’d also recommend taking a look at Threema.

I think their product direction is a bit better. Particularly as Signal still shows a message that they don’t back sync messages before you paired devices “for your security” … Threema also doesn’t back sync messages in their beta multi device setup, but that seems to be more less of a product stance and more of a “we just don’t do it yet.”

Threema is definitely missing some features like emoji reactions, stories, and a builtin cryptocurrency (which depending on your stances might be pros or cons).

Both apps have definitely gotten better over the years; I think Threema’s multi device support has really drained resources on their side so there hasn’t been as much outward feature work. I’m hoping it won’t be terribly long until that changes.

Then not to be aggressive about it, but go get qualified or stop spreading FUD honestly…

I mean there are advantages to using AV1 for photos… Hardware accelerated decoding being one.

Decoding a large AVIF image grid should in theory work on a GPU and happen faster with less power than any software based image format implementation.

AV1 is also just an awesome format that’s entirely free to use out of the gate.
