I’m not sure why he finds it so hard, I think it has aged really really well. It doesn’t really have many or any clunky difficult mechanics. Gameplay is fast(for a turn based jrpg), simple, doesn’t require long explanations or a guide book, and you don’t have to grind like other jrpgs as long as you kill everything on your way to the next story point.
It still looks good and the music is good too. Unless you just don’t like 2d sprites or turn based combat even if it’s easy, I will wager you’d still enjoy it.
I’m replaying it right now, started about 2 weeks ago and play a bit where I can. The only thing is that I’m playing the PC version and I don’t like the controls one bit. If I were to recommend it to anyone, I’d say just stick with an emulated copy.
It was made around the pinnacle of sprite graphics (the ps1 came out soon after, ushering us into the 3d era). Sprite graphics age better than 1st Gen 3D fo sho, the music makes the most of the hardware (tho its chip tunes) but its the art direction that puts it over the top and into greatness. I am am old man lol, i played it when it came out, aaand i replay it every few years or so, take my opinion for what it’s worth. Caveats aside i think if you like a good story you’ll like chrono trigger
And I can’t replay it, I’ve tried. It damages my memories of it too much.
Think I’d be good going in fresh? I played it in the 90s long enough to be impressed by the music but that is all I can remember.

It’s never going to be as good as your memories of it

I think so! For me I remember too much of the story and want to hurry up and get to it.
Sure, it’s in the app stores now even.
