  • We have an election in the next few months and our conservative party will likely win. They’re running a Trump-lite campaign around cutting government agencies.

Moreover we have always been very culturally, socially, militarily and politically aligned with the US.

For example, right now we tacitly support Ukraine but would have been very cautious in expressing that support since November last year. With our current progressive government it would be… challenging it Trump asked us to toe the line and declare Ukraine the aggressor. In a few months however I wouldn’t be surprised if our newly elected conservative government was much more willing to sing that song.

In my city last year there was a vocal group of conservatives trying to ban books at the library, and prevent the city supporting a LGBTIQ+ festival, and stoke foment over transgender people using public toilets. We import a lot of US conservative politics.

We may not seem like a particularly authoritarian country but we have ever been poised to become such. We’ve always scored very poorly on privacy, and media bias.

  • I’ve never moderated anything on reddit but…

Can you just change the topic and start deleting posts which do not align with the new topic ?

… or impose complicated rules about what types of posts are allowed on what days of the week / month.

“post titles can only include the letter B on the second Tuesday of each month!”

These types of shenanigans would surely make it a wasteland for new content. I do wonder how long it would take to actually die though. Would people unsub? The user count might just stagnate for ever.

Like most phobias I think most people experience discomfort with this imagery but to really have a phobia it needs to be an unreasonable level of anxiety I think.

IDK why we have a hard wired aversion to these. It might be a vestigial response to some kind of predator or danger which is no longer relevant.

  • Yeah.

I’m just not into having a massage from someone I’m not romantically entangled with. Some people are, hard no from me.

That said, my wife is Thai. Massage skills seem to be something like Swimming is to Australians or cooking to Italians. You learn some at school but it’s such a big part of your cultural identity that everyone just knows how to do it.

She very frequently tells me that massages aren’t supposed to feel good nor are they supposed to be relaxing. Apparently a good massage hurts and you take as much pain as you can bear in order to “fix your muscles”.

We’ve been together for 13 years now and I’m still not sure how much I believe her.

  • Doing subpar work under a “not my job” mentality isn’t just unprofessional - it displays poor character.

It’s easy to say it’s poor character but we just don’t know what has transpired in the lead up to this thing being painted.

Some people are absolute assholes to work for. There may have already been significant problems in performing this contract and the person doing the work is being exploited through a bad contract or what have you.

  • I would think very carefully before contacting the police. I am not suggesting that you should provide a safe harbor for people sharing CSAM, or obfuscate their crime. You absolutely should take action, but carefully weigh your options before calling the police.

While it may (possibly!) be true in your jurisdiction that platform operators are not liable for user content, police aren’t on “your side”. Even if you assume the highest standards of professionalism from them, they need to represent the interests of the victims (not you) and need to diligently investigate the crime. That means they need to confirm beyond reasonable doubt that you are not involved beyond operating the host.

Just because you self-disclose does not mean that you are innocent. You could’ve been actively participating and when threatened with blackmail you’ve decided to self-disclose to avert guilt.

Another consideration is what else I have on my server. I’m catch and release for pirate movies and TV these days so there’s only 100gb or so. I do have several hundred pirate audiobooks though. Deleting all that before handing my server over will look very suspicious.

With all of this in mind, the only course of action is to talk to a lawyer. A lawyer will know exactly what laws are relevant, and can guide you through the process of self-disclosure while minimising the imposition on you.

  • ok so don’t hate me but h001, h002, h003, and so on.

That’s h for host. I also use n to number networks, and k to number physical keys.

I list them all in my keepassxc password database, where I can include any additional information.

With the prevalence of vms, docker containers, and docker networks, there’s just too many things to name. By numbering them I can just side step that whole game.

  • A lot of these are adjacent to real observable phenomenon but a nutty belief system has been overlaid and then additional claims are made on the basis of that nutty belief system which are not observable.

For example, Feng Shui in practice is usually pretty sensible “where should I put the sofa” kind of stuff, but if you claim that it’s about the flow of qi through your house and suggest that based on that not only should the sofa go over there, but you need to put a topiary vase on the table next to it, that might be a nice aesthetic touch but there’s no evidence of qi.

Additionally there’s plenty of Traditional Chinese Medicine that became actual medicine because it has observable properties. For example turmeric is a mild anti-inflammatory.
