  • On Jan. 10, as political turmoil embroiled the federal government, Transport Canada informed dealerships that the EV rebate program would run out of money before its scheduled end in March.

“Due to the high uptake, the iZEV Program will be paused in a few weeks,” stated the email sent to dealerships just before noon on the Friday, obtained by the Star.

By Monday, all the money was gone and Transport Canada announced the EV rebate program was “paused.” It shut down the online claims portal for dealers, leaving hundreds without recourse to recoup their money.

“Tesla had a run on the bank,” said Williams. “Somehow, Tesla gamed the system.”

The crux of the matter is when paperwork called an “eligibility assessment” needs to be filed by the dealership.

On the one hand, Transport Canada says dealers “must always submit an eligibility assessment prior to an incentive being paid.”

On the other, it says, “there is no rule” to prevent them from submitting the paperwork in bulk, after the cars have already been delivered.

  • It’s never been about rare earth minerals. It’s always been about food production.

The European Commission reports that Ukraine accounts for approximately 10% of the global wheat market, 15% of the corn market, and 13% of the barley market. Moreover, the country has earned the distinction of being the world’s largest exporter of sunflower oil, with a staggering 50% of global exports. Additionally, Ukraine ranks third in barley production, fourth in maize production, and fifth in wheat production. In 2021 alone, Ukraine exported cereals worth close to $12 billion, further solidifying its prominence in the global food market. Source

If Ukraine’s depleted agricultural GDP has been a boon to Russia, the rising global food insecurity that has resulted from Russia’s war has also been beneficial: Ukraine’s diminished exports have created openings for Russia, another major global agricultural exporter, to make up for Ukraine’s losses, with Russia using its agricultural exports as a source of soft power. In early 2022, Dmitry Medvedev, the former Russian president and current deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, declared food to be Russia’s “silent weapon.” Source

  • In 2023, with $110 million in aid from the Quebec government, Davie purchased Helsinki Shipyard Oy, a shipyard located in the Finnish capital that alone built 60% of the world’s icebreaker fleet.

The yard was once owned by Russian investors and had designed a new type of icebreaker for a Russian company that was never delivered due to sanctions imposed on Moscow following its invasion of Ukraine. It is this design that will be adapted for Canada to replace the aging Louis S. St-Laurent , which remains Canada’s heaviest icebreaker in service.

  • He’s a different kind of man, a different kind of economist. He has morals and does what he believes is right (every job he’s been offered he’s discussed with his wife and daughters before making a decision).

He’s honest as the day is long, and never avoids the tough questions. He doesn’t blame anyone else for his decisions, and tells it like it is when faced with political-type choices.

He’ll be able to handle Trump like nobody’s business and I suspect already has a plan laid out to do so.

I honestly don’t think there’s anyone else who could get us out of this Trumpian mess better than Carney.
