My feeling is that the movement away from American products has started.
I always say that if I am doing it, as a very average person, then it’s likely that a lot of other people are doing it also.
The article (at least the free segment, rest is paywalled) just summarizes the movement. It’s not an indication of the movement’s popularity, just a low effort copycat article.
My translation (focusing on accuracy of the content instead of writing quality):
Hate Trump? Buy European! But can we exist without American gadgets, apps, and products?
A pan-European movement has commenced to boycott American products and services as a reaction to Trump’s international carnage. Many things can be substituted with European alternatives, but the likes of Google, Facebook, or Microsoft are not expecting a crash like what Tesla experienced.
Following Trump’s havoc inside and outside the country, an economic separation between America and Europe is more likely than ever. The economies of western nations have become so codependent that it’s difficult to imagine what life would be like without American products and services. It may not remain fantasy for long: as a reaction to Americans turning their backs to the world, some Europeans started a movement, with a message that can be summarized such: “Buy European, Boycott American.”
Reddit’s BuyFromEU community has grown an audience of over 110 thousand since its inception in February, which is far from either the website’s total number of users or the population of Europe, but the GameStop controversy is proof that such organized groups should not be underestimated.
The users interpret the community’s name in a loose sense, putting emphasis on replacing American products (and primarily services) with alternatives from the EU, Britain, Norway, Switzerland, or even Canada; or even products that are tied to America, but are based on open-source technology or operated by not-for-profit entities. The movement is assisted by several websites, like “European Alternatives” or “Buy European Made” by listing alternatives and opportunities to replace American products.
The rest of the article:
- Infographic presenting European alternatives
- How Europe is benefitting from America, and where Europe does better
- Is there life beyond Google, Facebook, iPhones, and Netflix?
- A black star solution (nb: I have no idea what that means)
The rest is paywalled and I haven’t found an archived version.
