I’m quite confused by this article. Though I wasn’t born in Maine, I was born in the USA. I’m literally looking at my birth certificate right now, born in 82, and it took them about a year and a half to even issue my birth certificate, even longer to issue my SS number.

What is the normal expected procedure these days, in case I ever have offspring?

Colorado here. Offspring spawned a few years ago. We had a social security number before Mom was discharged. Offspring was born super early, and her low birth weight entitled her to receive social security benefits while in NICU. While that amount was super low, it also made her qualify automatically for Medicaid, which was awesome because they paid her deductible from my work’s insurance.

They also submitted information for the birth certificate to what used to be tri-county health department (which has since been split up) but we had to go to their office to pick it up.

I was issued an early SS number.

Guess what? It started with 950.

Guess what else? SS numbers can’t start with a 9…

SS paperwork is filled out and mailed at the hospital, then delivered to the house when the number is assigned. Birth certificate is printed at town hall of the city where the child was born, whenever you get around to bringing the certificate of birth over. At least that’s how it worked in Maine for my last kid.
